It’s a car, it’s a plane… it’s a Terrafugia Transition.

Terrafugia Inc. is debuting a different sort of hybrid — a flying car. The Transition Roadable Aircraft, as the vehicle is known, looks like a mini-car with fold-up wings and a rear propeller. It fits into a single-car garage, and is powered with regular unleaded gasoline.

Terrafugia is scouting out financial institutions to provide financing and insurance for the $194,000 aircraft-car.

Already, the Woburn, Mass.-based company has gotten 70 pre-orders for the Transition. It plans to deliver to its first customer next year.

Doesn't look like it offers any room for backseat drivers.

The Terrafugia Transition has been cleared for takeoff by the U.S. National Highway Safety Administration. Though the Transition's price tag has increased, to about $230,000 from $170,000, as many as 100 customers have paid a $10,000 deposit for the flying car. Might we see some exotic vehicle financiers partner with Terrafugia?
