AI ‘cloning’ scam impersonates dealerships with fake websites

Fraudsters are creating fake auto and equipment dealership websites with AI to trick consumers into sending them money. More than 100 “dealership cloning” sites — websites impersonating active or defunct dealerships — were identified by risk management software provider Point Predictive , according to its March 24 report. Potential consumers will wire money for a vehicle or piece of equipment to the cloned site but never receive anything. Sites can quickly go offline once transactions have been processed, leaving customers with little recourse, according to the report. Losses from dealership cloning are difficult to quantify, as customers often do not report them, but are estimated to cost millions annually, Point Predictive Chief Fraud Strategist Frank McKenna told Auto Finance News . For example, the Better Business Bureau in central Alabama documented $223,000 in losses from one fake retailer, according to Point Predictive. How it works Scammers most frequently create websites with AI impersonating classic car, muscle car and heavy equipment or tractor dealers, McKenna said. Scammers usually target dealers with positives online reviews that went out of business or lack a website. Courtesy/Point Predictive[/caption] The fake websites have a few consistent patterns, according to Point Predictive, including: Listings that are significantly cheaper than standard prices; Vehicles are only delivered and customers cannot visit in-person; A “trust kit” is offered with the vehicle containing VIN proof, dealership ID and photos; No physical address is listed on the website; and AI-generated photos or video testimonials. Sites also list phone numbers, which connect victims to the scammers directly. Fraudsters can use AI to generate realistic photos of identification or any proof a customer wants, McKenna said. When calling one scam site, a fraudster “sent me invoices, the back of his driver’s license, a picture of the tractor loaded on a trailer. … No matter what I asked for … he would send me something,” he said. Once customers pay online for the nonexistent product, the scam is complete, he said. Dealer, lender risk Dealerships that are impersonated could lose potential customers and could suffer reputational harm, according to Point Predictive. Cloned dealerships reported declining Google reviews and “being destroyed overnight as angry victims post warnings about a scam the real business had nothing to do with,” according to Point Predictive. In some instances, fraud victims of the fraud went to dealership locations demanding vehicles they never sold, according to the report. Renton, Wash.-based dealer group Car Pros has not run into a dealership cloning site so far, Vice President of Operations Ginger Aden told AFN . However, the group regularly educates employees on new fraud attempts, including digitally focused scams like phishing schemes, she said. “There’s so much fraud out there. … It’s everywhere, so it’s something that we have to be diligent about and continue to talk about,” Aden said. While lenders may not face direct losses, they could face reputational damage by allowing “wire transfers on behalf of the scammers,” Point Predictive’s McKenna said. Additionally, lenders who work with dealerships need to be aware of dealer impersonation scams so the lenders do not also become victims, he said. “If [scammers] find a lender that doesn’t know how to do due diligence on these AI cloned dealers, they might end up interacting with one of them,” McKenna said.
